Weimar's History

Weimar Town Museum in Bertuch House shows the history of Weimar in the time from 1919. The rooms on the ground floor are occasionally open for the various exhibitions and public lectures organised by the museum's Association of Friends and Patrons. The impressive building, constructed between 1780 and 1803 was built by Friedrich Justin Bertuch - a citizen of Weimar. Bertuch also initiated an "Industrie Comptoir" which was intended as a trading house to give local manufacturers, artists and handwokers a place to show their wares. Bertuch's publishing house became one of the largest in Germany.

Democracy of Weimar

Until the 95th anniversary of the founding it had only been a small department of the Stadtmuseum (City Museum) of Weimar representing one of the most important events of German history: The founding of the Weimar Republic that was sealed by the ratification of the constitution by the National Assembly in 1919 at the German National Theatre in Weimar. A new and comprehensive exhibition portrays this chapter of history more elaborately and within the context of World War I.

Not only German visitors, including numerous school classes, but also international groups will get up close-up view of the process of founding a republic in the small town of Weimar by examining numerous historical original objects, films, posters, models, medals and documents. The many photographs and film sequences recount the historically significant weeks in Weimar in an especially impressive way.
