Made in Weimar

Wine from the Poetenweg

Werkstück Weimar

The Werkstück Weimar represents the revival of wine-growing in Weimar. The industry has been back in business on Weimar’s Poetenweg, over an area of 46 hectares, since 2008, and a very unique shell-limestone (Muschelkalk) residual soil encourage the cultivation of some special grape varieties, such as Auxerrois, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc, Silvaner, Blauer Zweigelt, Dornfelder and Frühburgunder (Pinot Noir Précoce).

The hillside in a climatic heat island, enjoying a lot of sunny days, while cooler winds in the north ensure low air humidity, favouring dry wines with higher acidity and good storage properties. But the acidity does not take over the taste, instead remaining embedded in the aromatic context.

"We call our wine Werkstück Weimar, because it is a Werkstück (piece of work) produced through joint efforts", is the explanation given for the label’s name. The winegrowing region has been managed by the Freyburg-Unstrut winegrowers’ association since 2015. The vines were first planted by the Prince of Lippe from the Weingut Proschwitz winery in Meissen.
